"In the manual they show a table giving the pressure of the 3 1/2 drams DuPont Bulk Smokeless pushing 1 1/4 ounces of #6 shot as 11,700 psi, with 3 1/2 drams of Schultze 11,800 psi, and the same load pushed by 28-grains of Ballistite at 12,600 psi!! Velocities were all given over 40 yards, not the muzzle velocity figures we are use to seeing today. The DuPont bulk gave 943 fps, the Schultze gave 941 fps, and the Ballistite 966 fps. Meanwhile 40 grains of their DuPont Oval gave that 1 1/4 ounce of #6 shot a velocity of 981 fps with a pressure of only 9,400 psi."
Dave, if these pressures were at 40 yards, what the heck were they at the muzzle? PSI is PSI no matter what kind of powder you are using, and those figures are higher than what I would want to use in an old gun. I try to stay in 7500 psi range and around 1050 fps.
Those figures would be close to SAMMI now.

It was velocity, not pressure at 40 yards.

I have shot my Parker VH with 34" bbls at doubles. I suck with it...it shoots great. Gun originally ordered by Arthur DuBray (sp?)and was redone by Oscar Gaddy. Fun to shoot.

I very seldom shoot Trap, but I shoot a lot of Skeet with vintage doubles -- 16-gauge Fox-Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun -- 12-gauge SPE-Grade Skeet & Upland Game Gun -- 12-gauge No. 4E NID Skeet Gun with vent rib -- 20-gauge Lefever A-Grade --

Thanks, I mixed them up, was also wondering why the velocity was so low.
Still seems like a very stout load and even for todays shooting I would think would be too high for older guns.

Chuck, you are right, but they are old now. We talk about shooting low pressure low velocity out of vintage guns, and if the guns from this vintage are still in great condition, what makes anything different? I know I wouldn't shoot them in any of my old guns.

Heck, I've shot a round of skeet with my 1917 Flues SBT. Not so shabby out of bounds in the weeds. And yes, I've shot a few rounds of 16 yd. with it but it does take special fodder which has to be loaded which means setting the Sizemaster so I don't have to mess with the 4000g and we all get older so sometimes it's just easier to get some Walmart loads and use the model 12.

I agree with Walt, except I use my NID 4E SXS for any shooting that gets in front of me. A great ole' gun!! The "sib" Knick 4E SBT needs a stock to my dimensions - otherwise another great ole' gun!! BTW, anyone who has heard me whining about the single trigger doubling - well, I fixed it, or at least in initial testing, by putting spacer washers under the back and middle trigger plate screws. It has even resumed digesting 7/8 oz loads! DDA

And this one on nice Sunday afternoons at the traps. This 1926 Ithaca will handle what I put in it. Has all the options plus a Monte-Carlo.
