Recently there was a cased Charles Lancaster Jones underlever double rifle (oval bore .450 Black Powder Express 3 1/4") for sale on the Ellwood Epps site.

It is listed for $4,950(in "good" condition).

This price is way less than other English black powder double rifles.

Are Lancaster rifles generally considered to be "lesser" than other makes?

I e-mailed Ellwood Epps and their reply was that that "Lancaster brand name does not command the premiums that other London brand names command".

I had always thought that Charles Lancaster was a top name.

It doesn't have the same dollar value as Purdey, Boss, H&H but I'd take one anyday of the week. On par with Westley, Greener and so on. If the case and mold is original, and the rifle looks in good shape it's not a bad price at all. Ask for lots of photos, see if they can ask the last owner for a load that regulated and it's most likely an older rifle with the non rebounding locks. It also sounds like a plain Jane working rifle. No engraving or other fancy stuff just lots of bang for the buck.

Dan Aykroyd's character in The Blues Brothers movie gets his name from the name of this store - Ellwood.

Elmer Keith had a Lancaster in .375 H&H Flanged. See his book, "Rifles for Large Game". Elmer didn't buy junk...
