I am in Colorado Springs for a few days and found an interesting Mauser in a shop. It is labeled as a G&H, but it appears to a "typical" Mauser sporter that has been through their shop at some time. The barrel is marked "barreled by Griffin and Howell" and is 30-06 with a decent bore. Action is stippled on top of receiver and only has the serial # on RH side and on LH side a number proceded by a smaller gb script. Double set triggers, no engraving. Safety wing is numbered 44 and does not match the last 2 on the receiver. Has G&H side mount base and a Lyman 35 (sight that replaces bolt release). Stock is what I call typical of a German sporter, with the panels on the sides of the receiver. This is not a pristine gun, but with proper attention could be made into a decent rifle (possible restock). Asking price is $2200 which seems high to me. What I need is a ball park idea of what this might be worth (I know no pictures) and would it be worth my time and effort to restock it (say a G&H "style" semiinlet) if the repair couldn't be cleaned up. I apologize for the lack of pictures and hope my description gives you enough of an idea. Also, what should I look for in addition to what I have described? Haven't asked the shop to take it out of the stock or anything. Thanks in advance.

Thaine, Welcome to the forum.

It's going to be tough without some pictures. If we can only do Q&A I'll ask some questions.

Is the side mount a single or double lever mount?
Is the mount mounted so there are no screw heads or pins showing on the outside?
Is the bolt knob checkered and is it round or pear shape?
Is the front trigger shaped the same as the rear trigger or is it curved downwards?
What kind of buttplate does it have?
What does the front sight look like?

PS: The barrel should read "Barreled by Griffin and Howe"

Hopefully there will be a board member who lives close by that could look at it with you.

Michael, glad you are still up.

1. I would say double lever mount, 2 groves.
2. The mount is hid by the stock, I could not see the pins or screws.
3. Bolt knob, duh, but I believe it was smooth round. Otherwise it should have caught my attention.
4. Don't know the answer on the triggers.
5. Buttplate was grooved black, possibly horn (although I saw no checking or shrinkage) Best I recall screw heads were engraved.
6. Can't recall the front sight.
Hopefully I can get a few pictures tomorrow and clear up some of the confusion. And do I feel "dumb", Howell is not what it said, but Howe. The barrel contour and weight seemed correct when I compared it in my CRS memory. I was in their Greenwich store in Oct.

Thaine,

Pictures will tell us a lot, if no pictures see if it has a barrel key in the forend.

Also might take notice of the trigger guard,it's hard to get DST's in Mauser guard so many German smiths used a shotgun trigger guard.

The caliber should be engraved on the left side just in front of the action.

Good luck,

I'll get over early in the AM and see what I can do. Will check out all that you asked about and note any other details. I gather it may be worth a closer look.
Thanks again.

Notice the serial number on the right side, do you have the number from the rifle?

I believe that the number 133478 is a JP Sauer number and the Mauser number will be found on the bottom flat under the wood.

Looks basically like your picture. I am trying to upload the series I took to Flickr, but am enjoying the first time experience of smart phones, notebooks and being away from all my resources.
