Thread hijack warning!:
Since we are talking about things that people hate, I'll first give him an Amen since I hate cyanide CCH and I really hate that brown CCH they slop on some of the heavily engraved double rifles. If CCH adds beauty, the aforementioned certainly do not apply.
Now what I really, really hate and really, really don't understand are L.C. Smiths. The best grades of their entire line have disgusting, cartoon figures on them. I can't understand why anyone thinks they are of any note at all. The crappiest Birmingham English boxlock far excels over anything an LC Smith has to offer. I don't particularly like American guns but a Lefever, a Fox or a Parker seems to be 10,000 times the gun. I cringe thinking about LC Smiths as I type this. metal and wood finish worthy of a 9th grade shop class!
Okay, now I'm off to change my name and enter the witness protection program.

Okay, now I'm off to change my name and enter the witness protection program. I'd say the same about bolt actions in general, but I've used up all my coupons for the Witness Protection Program, so I won't.

I don't particularly like American guns but a Lefever, a Fox or a Parker seems to be 10,000 times the gun. The problem is, from both a gunsmith's and a shooter's point of view, the Elsie's lockup will still be solid & tight long, long after the others have become loose. I'll admit that the foregoing is an opinion, but it's a factual opinion based upon many years of experience and many double gun refurbishments. I'll also freely admit that I sympathize with your feelings about the engraving. The Elsie engraving looks cartoonish in the extreme but so does most early US factory engraving, for examples see many Marlin and Winchester arms of the early years. And I'll agree that the lines of most Elsies are somewhat awkward and angular when compared to many UK guns, even the least expensive ones. But their lockup/durability is QUITE stout and long-lasting when compared to their competition of the time. When the shooter hears & feels the SNAP of the Smith's top-lever locking up, why, the sound of the competitions's lockup seems more than a little aenemic...... JMO, regards, Joe

A question of taste, which really can't be argued. While I have always disliked color cased bolt actions, walking through the local Beretta Gallery is enough to make me ill. Nothing but shiny stocks and shotgun frames with gold lettering on what looks like the bumper of a 50's caddy. Give me a case hardened frame any time! Some simple scroll engraving, or not, as you like. No lions, tigers, bears, rattlesnakes or howling coyotes.

Like a Colt New Service, you can abuse the action on an Elsie for any number of decades and it still holds tight (not the wood). I like that a lot. Cartoon birds and dogs, yeah, I get that. But (like the aforementioned Colt) for "leave it alone and then kill things with it," it's hard to beat an LC Smith. I wonder if their typewriters were as durable?

Rookhawk: For those that are buying only floral girly engraving and consider that to be the number one priority....so be it, obviously you are NOT mechanically inclined and do NOT do your own work or you would know........from the gunsmiths perspective, an LC Smith of any grade locks up like a bank vault..... I own and shoot most brands, but the LC Smith is really a treasure and it's mechanical quality beats the rest.......of course we all have our own opinions..........some like lots and lots of parts so there are lots and lots of stuff to break.........just an opinion, right......... And this one is just for you Rookhawk....Factory Original 100% Cyanide Colors from Fox in 1929... cyanide done the right way...Best,
Doug
