You guys are great. Thanks for the input. The "mind" games of the left, more tightly choked barrel, being fired by the front trigger, is complicated by the fact that the correct hammer also needs to be cocked.
I'm easily confused. Heck, my foot still reaches for the clutch when I jump into a an automatic transmissioned car.

Sorry that I forgot to mention that it was a hammer gun made in 1885!

MIKE THE BEAR,Almost certainley A previous owner or some amature gunsmith has, due to lack of knowledge switched the trigger position after taking the action apart. It will take any competent owner/gunsmith about 15 minutes to fix the issue.

Purdey amongst others built "driven game guns ",especially for the grouse moors were the front trigger fired the left ,choked barrel ,the rear trigger firing the more open barrel. Logical when you think about it. I have seen several although most were older guns ,going back to the days when a gentleman would arrive at his peg ,be handed his gun by his loader , shoot and then not see his gun untill the next drive or days shooting.

I suspect that gunman is more than likely correct, given the age of the gun. At some point in its past life it's barrels were also probably replaced as they are steel and not Damascus. I would anticipate that, if the triggers were "wrong" they would have been corrected at that time.
In any case, I'm pleased to know that, while the trigger/barrel relationship may be unusual, its not unheard of in a gun of this vintage.
