Hi All:
Where can I find a source for steel butt plates for both rifle and shotguns?
What model of guns ie, Winchester Savage etc. would have steel butt plates that would look good on gun?
Any suggestions?
TIA,
Franchi

Hi Joe:
Yes, I did try Brownells, Gun parts etc. etc.
There are numerous butt plates listed on E Bay that may work. These are mostly listed for rifles. Perhaps a Winchester ,Savage etc. would also look really nice on a shotgun.
I just can not bring myself to put a plastic but plate or grip cap on a gun that I have spent a large amount of time restocking! I have the same thoughts about recoil pads on a nice gun! As a matter of fact, I hate to see a recoil pad on any gun! If one must have a recoil pad on a gun, isn't this a way of Mother Nature telling the shooter that he is shooting too big of a gun?
Sincerely,
Franchi

Buy a set of those neat heel and toe plates Glenn Fewless made up. When fit, checkered, and engraved I have not seen anything any classier than that...Geo

I personally like leather covered recoil pads. If they are well done they look elegant on a shotgun. That said you can certainly buy heel & toe plates such as the ones that Glenn sells. They are very well done and look wonderfull when they are finished.
If you really want to get frisky, make your own heel & toe plates from horn. They look especially nice on a shotgun or a single shot rifle. You have the added benefit of having something of your own design. The only draw back is that they take a lot of time to do properly.
Just a thot!

If it is a custom stock and you like a steel plate, what don't you like about the Neidner checkered buttplate?

When I was about 16 someone gave me an old 20 gauge single barrel ML that was missing the buttplate. I took a piece of copper pipe, slit it down the middle and hammered it flat. Then using an automotive bodywork hammer and a small anvil with a steel horn I carefully tapped, molded and filed it to fit the contours of the stock where the original buttplate had been mounted. Except for the fact that it was copper, it looked damn nice and original. Steve

Hi Eightbore:
I have used the Neidner butt plate on guns in the past. What I am looking for now is one that does not have the spur on the top. The Neidner looks great on rifles, but I think that they are out of place on a shotgun.
I do have one of those "original" Neidner but plates and they are much thicker than what one gets today. The new Neidner butt plates appear to be concave on the inside making fitting much easier.
I have seen pictures of Glenn's butt plates and they are really nice!! Temptation City!
I also made a horn butt plate for my restocked Franchi Falconet which turned out to be very attractive! Perhaps horn is the way to go but I am a sucker for blued steel!
Thanks to all for the replies.
Franchi
