for anyone interested, here is a chamber from a friend's .45-70 M74 Sharps. It is quite the same as any other original Sharps chamber including the M78s (Borchardts)in just about any caliber. And a number of reamer drawings have been made to cut these chambers in a variety of different calibers, including .40s. You could easily borrow/rent or buy such a reamer with a little effort and prowling on the Shiloh forum.

That is a Sharps 45-70 chamber it is not a Sharps .45 2-1/10 chamber.

They made both and they are very different. The 45 2-1/10 chamber has rifling to the very end of the chamber. There is a like new 74 here in town marked .45 2 1/10 and it has no lead, none.

Another friend in town has a Sharps 74 marked 45-70 and it is chambered for the groove diameter cartridge with a lead for using both commercial and government ammo.

Michael, all I know for certain is that chamber was in an original and untouched Sharps M74 marked .45 2 1/10 on the barrel. I'm quite certain of that. It was not a conversion rifle either. It does corroborate well with other original Sharps target rifles that others have reported. For a few years, I was all over looking for castings of original chambers and this was pretty representative of them.

I am unaware of an original Sharps marked .45-70 as opposed to 2 1/10.

But I'm unaware of lots of things.

A rifle sold by Meacham would, by my estimation, be a buffalo rifle. Though it was getting late in the game in 1879 I think.

Brent I may be wrong about the other marking it might be 45-Gov as apposed to 45-70. I'll ask the next time I see the owner.

Many Sharps have been converted over the years and been re-chambered or the lead opened up. One well known writer even wrote an article on how to change the chamber for the correct bullets.

It's a horse I have beat way to much and I should leave it be.
