I just learned something about the "star system" this site uses. I read Chucks discussion about barrel welding and noticed he had only 3 stars, and yet I learn things from Chuck on nearly everything he posts. I went to his profile and clicked on the star part thinking it would allow me to choose how many stars I wanted to give. I wanted to post 5 stars, instead the damn thing automatically gave Chuck 1 star (sorry Chuck). If that type of thing has happened for others it's no wonder users that give so freely of their time and knowledge to this board have such low star number counts. Steve

Steve,
I just gave Chuck and Rocketman 5-Stars ratings. I think the ratings require an average or number to raise a member's Stars.

You don't just rate with the 1 star setting, you can pick the number, up to 5, before you click "rate".

Steve: I don't think that's the problem. When you look at the Rate This User function, "1 star" is the option showing in the drop-down box. You have to select the number stars you want to award and then click the Submit Rating button. It will accurately log whichever selection you made. I suppose a few folks mistakenly hit the Submit Rating button first, before selecting their choice of stars, but all they have to do is repeat the process with a different selection and the system will change their "vote." The system may be silly, but I don't think it's broken. As an aside, IMO, the problem with the whole "popularity contest" idea is that the people who earn low ratings (usually because they are ill-mannered or a bit childish, break the rules, or generally poison the discussion) don't really care, and a 1-Star rating won't keep them from continuing their antics. Often you'll see two of them pounding away at each other ... the best response is to stay out of it and just let them wear themselves out. When others start to weigh in or criticize them, the mud just gets on everybody. Ironically, I bet most of them are nice guys you'd be happy to share a blind or a bottle with (just not at the same time, of course). They just like to argue and think this is a great place to do it. Like your mom used to say, it's all fun and games, until somebody gets hurt! Here's to the 99% who make this place such a pleasure to hang out at TT

Rockdoc & Chuck: I just gave each of you 5 stars for your contributions. I frankly think this whole system is somewhat silly but I don't own the site. Jim

Its is silly,by using the star system, before you consider what the member writes you "rate" someone's contribution to the forum by what "others" think.
I like to make my own judgment up about members and don't go by what others think.I would not expect others to go by what I think either, make your own mind up about members.

This rating system is crazy, but I do enjoy the site. I have yo-yo'ed from 1-4 over the years. I took a big hit from the Parker Repro boys when I questioned its being a "collectable". Hey, it's fine with me if they are; I have a few "rare" ones. People collect everthing these days. How about a little "sugar" for my rust removal post? It seems like anyone who posts what they believe is doomed to 1 (one) *.

I gave Homeless Joe five star rating recently but he still has only one star. I don't get it. Apparently > one person has to give such rating to increase anothers number of stars.

It's pretty easy. Its an average. If I get you 1 star, and Joe gives you 5 stars, your rating will be 3 stars.

I don't think that the Star System is childish, paying too much attention to it is. JC

How can Walter Snyder be only 3 stars? Why not delete the whole system and be done with it? What purpose does it serve? At the very least, make available a listing of the the rankings which lead to the rating shown (and the names of the geniuses who posted them).

Let's start a petition to eliminate the star system. As Craigster said, it is childish. And it's distracting. I can see no benefit whatsoever to have it.

Hmmm. Didn't think of that. It's intended to be shorthand for three of my passions - Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, Ruffed Grouse Society.

I don't think a petition is necessary, Dr. Bob. Stars and the thanks tally on Parker board make no sense at all. I have confidence that Reason will prevail. No board wants to look like it's run by Gadhafi, killing those he says he loves.

I agee with King here; reason will prevail. I've posted some controversial(to some) information regarding guns, politics and left wing socialists and it hasn't been appreciated by a small minority on this forum and I've been dinged by them for doing so. Jim

Ok, old stuff. The star takers would be less inclined if they were identified. Same with other posters. They would be more civil if they had to use their own names.

Maybe I'll just quit posting here, that way I won't have to worry about my stars.
Not that I ever did.

Just to bring some up to date information. I shot skeet this afternoon with Joe Wood and Amarillo Mike and NEITHER of them wore their STARS at the skeet range. While both were exemplary in their skeet skills, the stars awarded here were NOT displayed Mike

I think he's been keeping Joe's shooting skill under wrap ever since he found out Joe can shoot better'n him.

Well jOe, I see you've barely got your head above water. And I gave you a big 5 stars which didn't really help your standing much. I enjoy seeing you try to spice up this frequently dull, repetitive board with your wit and wisdom. Keep it up!
