I picked up a Manhattan Arms 10 gauge hammer gun with Fine Damascus 32" barrels today. Marks indicate made by Sauer and butt plate indicates imported by Schoverling & Daly. The Serial # is 27834. Any idea on the year this gun was made?

SD&G seemed to use their Manhattan Arms Co. name on guns from a variety of different sources. My Father use to have a Manhattan Arms Co. 10-gauge that was a very typical Birmingham A&D boxlock. We never knew who actually made the gun and it flowed down the river of commerce long ago. There are also Manhattan Arms Co. marked Hunter Arms Co. Fultons and some really cheap Belgian hammer guns with the Manhattan Arms Co. name stamped on them.

See The Double Gun Journal, Volume Fifteen, Issue 4, pages 101 to 108 for Sauer serial numbers. Looks like your gun would be from the early 1880s.

Most high end Charles Daly guns made by Lindner seemed to have Lindner numbers. Maybe the Sauer made guns from Daly had Sauer numbers. Sauer numbers are listed in various articles in DGJ authored by Jeff Stephens. The chart in issue 15-4 is not very definitive on early years, but later articles by Stephens may shed more light. Manhattan Arms marked guns of very high quality are much more scarce than lower quality guns similarly marked.
