OK; This is certainly way out of my regular interest. I was at my local gunshop today and he had a Stevens model 325 that has been converted to a hammer 45/70. Barrels are cut to around 25" or so, they are lined/rifled. a raised front rifle site, 2 back leaf sites approx 1" apart.(I was told 1 for 50 yards and 1 for 100 yards. New fancy wood on stock and forearm)with very fine skip line checkering. The floor plate and hammers are case color hardened with the rest of the gun blued. The gun reaks of a quality gunsmith/craftsman job. I am interested in the gun and was wondering what things should I look for or questions should I ask? The top lever spring does not function I am told because of the hammers, so you push the lever left to lock the gun. The gun has seen only slight use and is in as new condition. The shop owner didn't know who modified the gun but the owner has hunted successfully with it.
I would think that there are not alot of people capable of doing this type of work. Maybe someone here has even worked on it. Anything anyone can help me with or suggest would be gratefully appreciated.

I have been this route:

You really need to know what load the gun is regulated for. With out that info, you will spend a long time at the range. If the barrels are lined, walk away. I would never have chosen a Stevens 325 for the conversion. You really want a gun with a greener cross bolt to ensure the lock up.

If I had to do it over again today, I would buy Sabatti double rifle from Cabelas.

Pete, thanks for the reply. It is lined as you can see the rim/ring where the shell is loaded. It is a beautiful gun, but I was a bit concerned with the lockup. Someone invested alot of effort and money in this gun. I think I'll pass on it.
Thanks
