Hi all, well, I'm in the market for a nice quality Vintage English SLE, the criteria is either a 12 or 16b, SG or PoW, DT, SPFE, 28" bbls and the weight in the 6 1/2lb or less range. My price range is 10 to 12k. Right now I'm looking at this one: http://www.gun-vault.com/ww12.htmIt's a James Woodward for 11k. I was wondering if anyone has any leads or suggestions that would fit the bill. Thanks so much!!! Greg

Not a typical Woodward with styling or engraving but still a nice looking gun. Smallbore might have something in mind after he gets back from the Midland Fair now that he owns the candy shop. Lagopus.....

With replacement barrels I'd keep looking.
Quote:
James Woodward & Sons #4771 circa 1895 Sidelock ejector gun 12 bore 2 3/4 inch chamber. The new (not sleeved) 28 inch London steel barrels were made by another and proofed in 1974 for 1 1/8 oz. These measure R/L bores .732/.732; chokes .012/.027; walls .022/.024. The straight English stock measures 14 15/16 x 1 1/2 x 2 1/16 x 1/8 cast off to a checkered butt. Weight is 6-7. A rare example of an excellent London maker. $11,000

Thanks all. Thanks for point out the replacement bbls, didn't even notice it (blinded by beauty).
Franc is right, I'm in no rush and will be considering a few. I've also had a couple leads from folks here. Many thanks for that!
If any of you see something let em know!

Did you go over the Julia auction? Lots of nice doubles in there. In that price range I suspect you can find a good deal from several sources.

What is wrong with replacement barrels? I would prefer them over sleeving. The British take a whole different look at things than we do here in the Sataes. To them the gun is to be used. Most of these early guns were uaed a lot and often on many shoots during the season. Most fine London guns were originally made with thin barrels for balance and getting the weight down under seven pounds. So it is only natural that a gun that saw action several times a season and shot hundreds of rounds each shoot, then the barrels would wear out. Now I agree it is nice to find a Boss or Purdey made in the early years with original barrels and plenty of wall thickness. But lets face it, most barrels by now are in the low 20's on wall thickness. Replacement barrels done right are much better if you are wanting a shooter than weak, thin original barrels. How much is a set of new barrels going to cost by Purdey, Holland or Boss? Sleeved barrels will certainly bring shutters to die hard purists who only want the very best. It's time to realize most of these guns are getting to be or are already over a hundred years old.
