Browning used to enhance the grain of their stocks (not all, just some) with a "photo overlay," whatever that means. I don't know if this is still done. All the nice-looking grain on those guns is photo-etched on there. If you scratched the stock, you had to send it in for a factory refinish and re-overlay. Edit: I've read you can tell if the wood is an overlay if it has the Browning logo on the pistol grip cap.
Fabarms did it by using ink in the grain to make their stocks look better than they were. I had one of these once, it looked great.
