With the advent of the vast array of saboted rounds for 12 and 20 ga shotguns, and realizing that they shoot very well, is it not possible to simply replace the barrels on a existing 20 ga gun and have a very servisable double rifle?
Yes I understand the dificulty of regulation but would not the whole project be easy except for the regulation. And you'd have a gun, assuming a 20 ga, that aproximates a .444 marlin or similar?

(The following is typed with a grin.) It's real easy. All you do is send the gun and the money to the correct gunsmith and in a few months to a year you'll get your 20ga double rifle back. Cost= sleeving new rifled barrels into the old monoblock $1500- 2000, cost of two new barrels $200- 300, cost for ammo and regulating $100 to 500.

OK, so I'm ignorant, started life that way and am still working on it.
So my next question will be be just as dumb. The reason I asked the 20 ga question is that what I really want, and no I do not want one of those frilly looking things and I do not want something that weighs a tone, is a O/U double rifle that has the sturdy American look of a Ruger Red Label. I do not see any reason such could not be built on a 28 ga action, assuming the action is up to the pressures. And I'm not interested in some sort of dangeroius game round but rather a mild shooting round suitable for what we've got here in NE Florida. .35 Rem is my first choice.
Crazy....maybe, but I like the double for the same reason all of you who are more knowledgable like it, it's in the details that we differ. Kind of like arguing over what hair color you like on a woman even though we've agreed on the big issue of liking women!!

Fishdock,I know you had a good question. I really meant it tongue in cheek. Thats the problem with words on a screen, you can't hear the nuances. Have you looked at the EAA over and unders? I believe they come in 308 and 30-06 for about $450 - 500? Its a cheap easy way if you don't mind them stacked instead of side by side. Then if you like it well enough you could look for something you really want. Just a suggestion.

There's an old guy down in Sterling that I met at the Plamer Gun Show that has done several conversions just like the one pictured above. I saw a 20ga there pretty reasonable too. He said he's done more ,,, like a 45-120.. I think his name was John? Any idea what his last name or contact #'s are?

I know it was tongue in cheek, so was the reply......
It took me a while to get back to this because the wife and I ran back to the woods for the last couple of hours of light. She got a hog with her single shot 20 ga, rifled barrel and a red dot sight. 75 yards and it went not a foot. Just finished boning it out.
As for the gun question. I actually like the idea of a O/U better. And after seing what that sabot did ( It was one of those Hornady 265 grain SST jobs. ) I'm very convinced it would be more than up to the task.
So is there a guy who can convert a O/U into something like the picture.
And I have to ask....how well regulated are the barrrels on that 20? I understand that is the really hard part.

Sorry can't help you. I do rifles also, the one i posted was regulated for the Black Magic Brenneke. Imake cape guns also. I have one iam building in 12 gauge x 4570 with20 in bbls. Rich

I would suggest a 38-55 ,it is a rimmed ctg. with the power of the 35, would make a great ctg, or 356 Win. Rich

 The gun is a twelve gauge regulated for the Black Magic Brenneke (upper right target ) sold to a doctor in Maine, am presently building him a 20 bore on a Olsen Maneng action.
