Hi lads..I guess the real answer is sending 5 rounds to Tom Ambrust(sic?)for testing.
But before I do....
I have a H & R ugly duckling Slug Hunter Single 20 bore with rifled bbl..I have made up some light loads with a custom ball mold,it shoots amazingly well i think...with scope it'll do 1 1/2" all day @ 50 yds .
Just wondering if I use a shot recipe of equal weight..or slightly more rather than less, to be safe, than my roundball...do you think Psi would be less or more when subbing the roundball..???
Rifling friction.....V wad friction.
If I ever find a nice reasonable vintage single that's suitable , I think this H&R bbl would be a fine one to use for sleeving ,once you knocked of the bits that are in the way.
Any opinions
Cheers

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
How do you start trying to develop a Ball load that might duplicate
some of the lower psi ranges of shotloads that have pretty close payload weight
I believe it was meant to shoot Sabbot HourGlass type Slugs,
But I'm pretending it's a Vintage piece :), so am casting Balls.
It has apretty fast rate of twist , but it shoot WAY better than it looks
Chime in guys
Ihaven't a clue smile

Franc,
Since no one else has give it a go...

Lyman has data for their slug that goes into a wad - that could be a start.

The easiest route is to simply run black powder.
Goex FFg and lubed felt wads will get you there.
Dram for dram, add powder till you get the velocity you want (use your head, this isn't a weatherby exercise...).

I've never used round ball loads in a smokeless firearm but have fired probably a thousand or more in my 20 bore flint fowler. Generally the round ball weighs less than the max shot load. From that, even with the difference in type of fired projectile I would think the round ball load would generate less pressure. Seems the friction of even an unpatched round ball would be less also. Most manufactures of ML smoothbore guns offer data for firing PRB in those same guns.....or they used to.

Keep in mind that my experience shooting round ball loads in smoothbores is entirely with black powder.
