Steve:
It indeed looks to be Schuyler, Hartley & Graham and the Powell's patent number is 1773, well with the range you surmised. Also it is stamped "10" bore and I've been igniting 10 bore cartridges in it.

Kind Regards,

Hello, I have a hammer gun from my grandfather which he probably brought with him from Lynton, Devon, UK in 1905. It is a William Powell & Son gun, Ser. No. 4478, Joseph Smith's patent # 483.
I have photos available by email ( being new to this I have yet to figure out how to post them on this site.)
Where can I find more information on this gun? I have written to Richards in the UK about two weeks ago and am awaiting a reply - hopefully.

Many thanks for any help.

1873,
A William Powell & Son serial number of 4478 should date it to 1870. If you e-mail the photos to schmjh@pacbell.net I can give you more information.

Geno , the Powell lever lifts the Horsley lever slides .That may seem a simplistic answer but there is a whole heap of difference. The Powell lever is a lot stronger and gives more bite. One of the biggest problems is that the lever wears the axel [pivot pin] and can be a swine to get out and fitting a new one and filing it up is not so easy.
When the Horsley levers wear they are a nightmare to get right. But you have to accept at there age and that nobody ever thought that they would still be in use .Lets face it most of them were getting on when they first saw a Model T Ford and how many of those are still in daily use?

I have had several of these Powell guns, I recently sold a two barrel set with W richards name on the gun and I have another one away being sleeved at present.
