Hello, I am new to this forum. I have a Merkel 140 in 9.3X74R, Leupold 1.5-5 on german claw mounts. I need an airline case to transport my rifle to South Africa. I plan on having a shotgun barrel made for this in the future and would like a case to carry both barrels and the scope. What is a good case for this purpose? Also, can someone tell me if and how to remove and replace the front sight blade? It looks like it is an insert, but I don't want to start hammering on it if I don't know for sure how it comes out. Thank you, Carl

Have a look at a Pelican 1650! It's on my short list for my DR's. It's alot smaller that a regular gun case so it doesn't look like something a baggage monkey will play with.

Thanks, for your input. I was looking online at the Americase. I cannot tell what it has for locks. Any help on the locks?
The pelican is quite a bit larger and over twice the weight (30 pounds) of the Americase. With a rifle scope and shotgun barrel this would be pushing 45 pounds. Nothing I would like push though the airports.

Take a good look at Tuffpak. It is impossible to crush. Do not get TSA locks on a gun case. The sight should just tap out. You will need a drift pin. Pete

Thanks for the reply Tuffpak does not list a weight, any idea on what one weighs? Have you had a front site removed or is this a best guess? Take a good look at Tuffpak. It is impossible to crush. Do not get TSA locks on a gun case. The sight should just tap out. You will need a drift pin. Pete

Thanks everyone. I decided on the Americase. Cabelas had it in their Bargin Cave for $199 and $5 shipping. I love it when a plan falls together. Now, for the front sight issue. Has anyone had a Merkel 140 front sight changed out ???

You will really like your Americase. The Tuffpaks are also as rugged as a case can be and will hold a gun or 3 in soft cases + a lot of clothing stuffed in for additional padding. The folks that have them like them a lot. I have a 2-gun Americase and REALLY like it. I just make sure that each gun piece is in a good gun sock. You can also put a lot of extra stuff in the Americase like cleaning stuff, screwdrivers, etc. Just make sure to pad it all individually.
