I received a 12g hammer gun from Germany yesterday and would like to know what model/grade is it.
J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL - on rib
No German proofs, so IMHO it was made in the 1880s, before proof was mandatory in Germany.
No visible serial number (a new one was applied recently for legal reasons)
It has recent London proofs: crown/GP, scimetar-in-arm, diamond/12, 65MM, 850 bar...
I sent a couple of pictures to JC and hopefuly he is around and will post them.
I hope our Sauer experts will give me a clue what I've got. BTW the gun is in extra nice condition inside and out.
With kind regards,
Jani

It looks smashing! Very nice fences! very nice wood!

P.S. The photos are being downsized as I post them. What am I doing wrong?
What is this new "floating image" stuff? jc

Not a Sauer expert by any means, but it has attributes of Sauer longarms from early on such as the percussion fences and the locks are surely Sauer. But it is devoid of horn on the triggerguard bow and looks to have a pinned hinge-pin. Very interesting is the lack of a serial number. Any other Sauer type marks on the flats or tubes? Also most doubles from the 1880s had pattern welded tubes and wore either Lefaucheux, Roux or Jones underlever but a toplever was possible. I'm curious if there were older British stamps from the period on the flats? It looks to be a Model 0 or 1, and I think there were variations with changes in the model number. Is there a Doll's head extension or Greener crossbolt? Is the term "Double Grip Gewehr" on it anywhere?

Kind Regards,

Raimey

Some more pictures (if you right-click on the pictures and go to "Open Image In New Window" you can see them in the size I uploaded them):

As can be seen above, Raimey was the first to offer some answers about this shotgun.
I would be very interested to see a picture of your Sauer DR.
With kind regards,

Pod,
No need to be sorry, we all make similar small mistakes here, no big deal.
If you can, please show us the picture of your Sauer double rifle, it would be very interesting for comparison.

Raimey,
Thanks so far, hoping for more...
There are no other Sauer type markings visible, no old British marks, no doll's head or Greener crossbolt, no Double Grip Gewehr marking....
There are two sets of initials on one tube: WD and AL (? faint).
Additional London marks are 18.3, 18.4, crown/R, LP/96 (London Proof 1996-?).
With kind regards,
Jani
