Looking at having a DR built. Want to stick to lighter claiber. 30-06 is good but is rimless.
The 30-40 Krag round looks like a great DR caliber. its rimmed, has good ballistics, easy to get, reasonable price, currently manufactured. has spitzer bullets.
what other options? 303 Brit?? Well.....
Your thoughts?

If you are going the custom route why not a 7.62 X 54R (the cartridge used by Russian bolt rifles in WW1) It is rimmed, sports excellent ballistics, and recoil is negligable with the proper hand loads. I would specify .308 bore diameter though the russian rifles generally had .311 like the .303 brits. This opens a huge realm of bullet possiblities for handloading and should provide enough variety to find a load that the gun will like. It also has more case capacity than the 30-40 Krag and less taper. They only draw back is the availablity of BRASS cases as most of the stuff encountered at the "big boxes" IE Cabela's is steel cased and non reloadable. I believe Norma makes brass and so does Sellier and Bellot. Good luck and let us know what you choose

Either 7x57R or 8x57JRS. Both fully intended for use in break action rifles. Check out the ammunition and brass availability and specs on the Midway site.

Brian, your choice of the 30-40 Krag is a good one.The 30-40 is a ballistic twin of the .303,with a better bullet selection.
If it was to be my rifle,I would have it regulated for 180 grain bullets.Have fun!

Bob,

The 30-40 Krag predates the 30-03 / 30-06. It replaced the 45-70 as the US military round of choice. It was considered a small bore in it's day.

It can be handloaded to near 30-60 performance with slightly less pressure generated. The performance is closer to a .308.

The 30-06 would make a better long distance round, but we are talking about a double rifle.

Pete
