W. Richards guns I have seen have been guns of the highest order. You got a neat present.

Daryl: Doesn't the "ELG" in a triangle a Liege marking denoting a Belgian made gun?
Best Regards, George

Unfortunately that W&C Scott double sold and very quickly. Will keep on looking and thanks for the input gentlemen. Would love to see such an old gun out on the UK marshes after geese once again.

Best Regards, George George, ELG would be Belgian, though I have never seen it in a triangle. Here are the Belgian proof marks: http://damascus-barrels.com/Belgian_All_Proofmarks.htmlA Belgian proof mark only means it passed through the proof house at Liege. I have seen guns that bear both Belgian and British proofs. According to Vorisek, both Pieper and Crescent produced guns marked W. Richards. This of course is in addition to W. Richards of England. Pete, Firefighter describes the letters in triangular form; that will be the E above the LG in a circle (actually an oval) with a star. That will be Belgian. Could be a Belgian 8 bore but could be a W.Richards of Liverpool as Belgian tubes were sometimes source by English firms. Nothing to loose contacting W.Richards as he has fairly full records for these guns. If Belgian tubes I would expect later English marks when it was sent for final Proof. Lagopus.....

The action described certainly sounds more Belgian than Liverpool, thoiugh I couldn't say for certain that W Richards of Liverpool never made any "French" style guns.

Drink coffee, then post! I should have caught that. You are corect, the best avenue is to contact W. Richards. And it is possible the tubes were sourced from Belgium. Pete

Of course, it seems Belgian. I glanced at the post and saw the "found Liverpool" phrase and just did not read any farther. Had this trouble in grade school, too.
