I was thinking of buying a cheap .410 double and converting it to the best squirrel rifle ever! Anybody done this or contemplated it at least? Thoughts are much appreciated...

I think it would be a great project - Century Arms in Australia had a beautiful 22rf d/rifle for sale - only about $10,000 usf!
Main chore is moving the firing pins.

This was the hang up I was concerned with, I believe the liners would have enough room to be "shifted" in the bores. I think this project may be under way soon, I just bought a 5100 stevens from my local paper with a mushroomed muzzle for $50 so that's a good start....

I thought about that - I lined a Swedish rolling block 16ga to 38-55, filling the gap(about 0.020) with liquid epoxy. Single barrel so no need to regulate.
If the 22rf barrels were undersized for some length (10 inches?) at the muzzle end, a set of 3 or 4 long wedges each side could be used to nudge them into regulation, then filling the space with epoxy might work.
Some offset firing pin arrangement should be fairly possible.
Have fun, keep us informed!

I'm thinking of using the normal barrel liners from brownell's. I think I can set the liners "at an angle" in the bores to regulate (with wedges) then machine plugs for the chamber and muzzle (to concentricity) by measuring run out with an internal bore mic. Old school thought tells me to keep the bbls as long as possible (25" in this case) but a snappy little gun with 22" pipes intrigues me. What are your thoughts on separating the bbls and starting fresh? My only concern is getting in too deep...

I would not want to split the barrels - far too much work for me!
I think the longer barrels would look classier, but.....
The only challenge might be to get enough travel (Up/down l/r) at the muzzles to get regulation.
I made a concentric chamber fitting plug and soldered the 38-55 barrel liner into it.

You aren't likely going to take this thing to Africa or market it, so perhaps keep it simple.

I recall seeing a 12ga sxs converted to 45-70. The smith put a set of iron sites on each barrel. Certainly not elegant, but functional. MACE sells 410 to 22lr inserts. He will make them up in any length you desire.

The 22 hornet would make an interesting setup -
Curious as to the accuracy statement - I once short-sleeved a long barreled 22 rf single shot target pistol, as the barrel was very bad - Accuracy was bloody awful!
Resleeved full length and was fine. Maybe a fluke but have never trusted short (bullet type) sleeves since.
Shotgun type seem to work fine.

I am going to call that manufacturer of sleeves, that may be handy, at least for some info. I am getting pretty excited about this project now...my try a hornet but I think .22lr would be really cool
