Any info on this Birmingham maker? I can find nothing on Google. It is a 20ga boxlock ejector gun with game engraving. Photos as time allows.

I have found 5 Birmingham Bissells and one in London; sadly none of which is a H. Bissell. It was a Thomas Bissell who worked with Rigby's. Any other information on the rib? I will await photos and if you can show a clear one of the proof marks on the barrels I may be able to date it for you. Lagopus.....

Nice gun Mark. No.10 St. Mary's Row, Birmingham on the rib. Yard and gun forge behind numbers 10-11 St. Mary's Row, formerly a gunmaker's forge in the yard behind numbers 9-11 St. Mary's Row.

A fine example of a Birmingham made box lock. The engraving looks to be in the style of Henry Morris, who also had a shop on St;Marys Row,along with W.W.Greener and at one time William Ford. The picture of the forge building is facinating,I have some pictures of this same area prior to its demolition it was a facinating area for a researcher to visit. My own search of records, confirms Lapogus,s findings.

Nice looking gun.
So was H. Bissel purely a retailer?
Was 10 St. Mary's Row a generic address for guns being turned out by a group of makers in the Birmingham trade?
Is this address common to other Birmingham-made guns marked with other makers/retailers names?
Thanks

I agree with Roy and Lagopus. Several Bissells, none at that address or with a first name beginning with H.
OWD,
I searched the address and found several makers at, behind and around that address. Here is a very partial list. The complete list is just too long for St Mary's Row: Best & Townsend 9 St Mary's Row Birmingham Gun & Cycle 15 St Mary's Row George Blackburn Back of 10 St Mary's Row Henry Bowden 20 St Mary's Row Walter Brasenell Back of 15 St Mary's Row James Carr 9 St Mary's Row Carr Brothers 15 St Mary's Row Charles Chambers 15 St Mary's Row Alfred James Clarke 14 St Mary's Row William Clift Back of 16 St Mary's Row John Clive 14 St Mary's Row William Crawford Back of 13 St Mary's Row John Crofts 19 St Mary's Row Joseph Henry Curry 10 St Mary's Row (1912 gun finisher) Thomas Dean Back of 10 St Mary's Row Benjamin Evans Back of 10 St Mary's Row

It was a Thomas Bissell who worked with Rigby's. Was not Bissell the designer of the Rigby (Bissell) rising 3rd bite? Kind Regards, Raimey rse

At or shortly before the demolition of this part of the gun quarter one could find workshops in the courts and alleys bearing the names and skills of several craftsmen/gunmakers. There is little doubt that they did work in groups. I have owned two guns bearing the name H.Morris, the engraving on which was superb and in the same style as the Bissel. Henry[Harry] Morris was one of Birminghams finest engravers .In my opinion he finished and engraved some guns made by others for a change of pace and/or to augment his income. Lapogus comments please?
