Thanks, Harry. I've used it occasionally over the years on the farm, and even to clean some gun parts. But, no more. If it is not around I don't have to worry about it coming into contact with excessive heat or flame in someone's presence.

You can make the same nasty stuff by mixing common ammonia with household bleach. Damn near killed my old bosses wife.

Where did he get a can of that stuff?? Cleaning agents, wether domestic or for commercial use containing tetrachloroethylene have been outlawed for years. Personally, I like the old product better than what we're offered these days - it was so much more effective but the dangers were not only as described in the attached but in repeated contact with skin was a hazardous carcinogen. It was a great ant and wasp killer too - immediate death on contact.

Brake cleaner doesn't have 1,1,1 tetrachloroethylene in it anymore. He got a can of brake cleaner at the auto parts store, or, for that matter, Wal Mart.

It's everywhere, and fairly safe, until you light it up in the presence of argon.

Then, there is hell to pay.

Best,
Ted

Ted, the picture of the label showed that it contained tetrachloroethylene - what are we to believe?
