Sanity arrived about 1902

Some of the crack shots are discovering that "pigeon loads" are not necessary for long distance flying target shooting. When distance handicap was first tried many of the experts came out with big charges of powder. Lately the work of W. R. Crosby
at 22 yards on the stiffest kind of shooting has astonished the followers of trap shooting.
It will surprise many to learn that Crosby’s load was only 3 drams of "New E.C." powder, when he won high average at Cincinnati recently, shooting from 22 yards on the back mark, in a field of 150 crack shots, he had his old Smith gun and, Winchester Leader shells.

American Field, Chicago, Ill., Jan. 14, 1888
LaFayette, Ind. Editor American Field.
The Erb-Bogardus match, so long talked of, took place here Jan. 4, at 1 o'clock p. m. The shooting was at 100 live birds each, Hurlingham rules, for $250 a side. Capt. Bogardus used a twelve-bore Scott & Sons gun weighing seven pounds fourteen ounces, and shot four drams of Wood powder in the right barrel and four drams of black powder in the left barrel, using No. 7 and No. 8 shot. Mr. Erb used a Lefever twelve-bore weighing seven pounds fourteen ounces, loaded with 3 l/2 drams of King's Quick Shot powder in both barrels and No. 7 shot.

This is presumably the same gun he used in the 1883 competition with Doc Carver, who shot a hammerless 12b Greener 7 lbs 12 oz.

The Kleinmann Brothers, http://books.google.com/books?id=IRHYTAJ...;q=&f=false , evidently were supporters of Daly products in 1877. So I wonder if Bogardus every fanced a Daly.

Any chance of a Charles Daly hammerless in 1877?

Kind Regards,

Jan. 3 1878 he broke 5000 glass balls at 18 yards’ rise in 10 hours 40 minutes 35 sec, missing 163; using a 10 pound Scott, 3 1/2 dram 1 1/4 oz 8s. The report did not say if a 10b or 12b, but I suspect the former.

And James Julius Pringle shot Grants, Langs, and Purdys. Once he got his first hammerless Purdy in 1877 with choking the "lesser" guns would no longer suffice. I don't know how many glass balls he killed but on December 11, 1877 he did kill 366 snipe in six hours of shooting with that Purdy.
