Anyone know where there's a serial number list showing date of manufacture for the Webley & Scott model 700's imported by Abercrombie and Fitch back in the '50's and 60's? 1303XX...Geo

George, according to the dates of production available under "Other Useful Information" at this site, your gun was made in 1960. Here's the link: http://www.doublegunshop.com/dgsnos5.htm

Mr. Newbern, I am digitally recording and indexing the Abercrombie & Fitch gun inventory and sales records for the custodian of those records, Griffin & Howe, Inc. Griffin & Howe was once a wholly owned subsidiary of A&F and is the only entity of that famous outfitter still in the firearms business. I have recorded the serial numbers of many of the collectible firearms in the A&F records, including Webley & Scott, but the serial numbers available on the research page of the G&H web site include those from 1929 (when our A&F records begin) to 1964, although the books go up to 1977. I am indexing 1965 at this time. If your W&S was in inventory before 1965 the s/n should be on our website. If after, I will be happy to look ahead to find it. Just tell me the serial number & I'll give you the date the gun was placed in inventory and the model as recorded. I can also be contacted directly through the G&H website if you prefer. Research at Griffin & Howe

Bob,
I have a W&S 700, #137884, fron 1966, still NIB. Not sure if it was an A&F gun, would it be marked if it was?
thanks,
Rob

Bob, I appreciate your offer. The gun is a Webley & Scott 700 with 'Abercrombie and Fitch Co. Agents' engraved on the top-rib. The serial number is 130381, and your website indicates the record on the gun is available. Might as well publish the information here since it may be of interest to others (unless it turns up shoplifted or something)...Geo

George, Webley & Scott 130381was received in inventory on January 24, 1961. It is described in the A&F records as a model "704E". Comparing the records to known guns I have come to believe that the model designation of 704E was used to describe the model 700 ejector made specifically for A&F, since the model 704 is apparently not a known W&S model. All specifications of the shotgun are in the records and are available in the form of a research certificate. On October 2, 1961 your shotgun was transferred to the Chicago branch of A&F, known as Von Lengerke & Antoine. I believe that we have the VL&A record book for that year so the buyer's name is also likely to be available with a certificate. Your shotgun sold for $350 when new so I hope that you didn't give more than that for a used one!!

Rob,
I haven't gotten to that book yet but I'll have a look ahead when I get down to the store.

I'll never make it as a collector around here. Bob, thanks for the information, and I'll probably order the 'research certificate' out of curiosity...nice service...Geo
