In my prior life I was involved in many malfunction investigations/failure analyses for the military, and I must concur on this one. It has all the looks of a classic bore obstruction. Do your best to find all those spent cases. And please tell us the load data.

It looks as if several factors may have been involved here. The interior of the bore looks none to good. Deep pits and rust. The sling swivel is located right at the break, possibly the exterior of the tube against the rib got damaged during installion of the swivel. And the possiblity of an obstruction is the most likely.

Typical obstruction-type burst pattern. Not reloads again I hope.

No obstructions I guess. This type of burst is very well described in one old Russian gunsmith book. By muzzle view I could say the gun barrels were very well honed and by overall condition and appearence of this particular gun I guess it's been honed in wrong way, when there are some areas of thin metal in barrels. When shot and wad comes through such barrel, the pressure behind the shot could puff up this weak area like rubber ball. Then process of blowing up develops like you can see on pics. No extra loud sound, no huge recoil and probably the owner of this gun has dropped duck from burst barrel any way. All these can only prove there were not any obstructions in there. I just wonder how this gun did not blow up long time ago?

I have no argument that this was a near junker that had an obstruction. I do have one bone to pick. Who says that the barrel steel of that time period was stronger than Damascus of that same period???? This is a thought that has been proven to be false. No doubt that even a Damascus barrel that was honed to a tender thinness and then subjected to an obstruction would have probably burst as this steel one did. But, please !!! Understand that the barrel materials of that time period were not equal. Damascus (not twist) were far stronger that the "fluid" steel barrels. Of course, it pleases me to no small degree that many still do not know or believe this and thusly allow me to buy fine Damascus guns at a price that my shallow pockets allow. Best, John
