Have a LC LongRange with DOM 1926. The gun has the potential of a nice redo and back in the game as a shooter, BUT!! The barrels are cut. The barrels are 28 3/4" so probably started as a 32" gun. Muzzle diameter is .710" (about IC/IC) in both. My intention is to have Mike Orlen put in permanent chokes and have them exactly like the originals. I assume they were of a special configuration to get the "Long Range" results and tight patterns they are noted for. These chokes weren't developed with a back bore system like the Fox Becker HE's? Anyone have a skematic or detailed dimensional diagram of the choke. Appreciate any input. Randy

I'd suggest you go with 0.040" constriction with somewhere around a 2" taper length and no parallel. I'm yet to seen any real pattern control by odd shapes or lengths. Since I believe that choke effect is the result of venturi effect on a fluid passing through a constriction, this fits.

I don't have a schematic but my Long Range's chokes are as follows:

Bores: .729
Constriction: .040
Parellel Section: 1" at muzzle
Length or constriction: 2 & 3/4"
Start of constriction: 3 & 3/4" from muzzle.

The above is from memory. I can cerify tonight. David from the LC Smith board has several Long Range Elsies. I think he will respond soon.

Yup, for lead shooting, more is better. Super Fox chokes are sometimes in the mid 40s and work just fine. By the way, many Super Foxes were not overbored and, yes, work just fine.

Randy,
I went to the L.C. site first and tried to answer your question. I doubt that your barrels were 32", cut to 28 3/4" as they would read cyl/cyl.
I have checked mine with a Skeet's gage going in to 11 1/2" both ends and I don't see any unusual differences.
L.C. Smith had at the time the best barrel/choke men in the country. The Parker boys will tell you theirs was the best because of Ben Teipel's records, but they forget to tell you who bored his gun.

Unfortuatley there are no drawings of the Longrange chokes, although their method of "multipled choke boring system" stayed in effect from L.C. Smith Maker, Syracuse to Hunter Arms, Fulton.

Don't cry if Mike can't do the choke-fit, Randy. I'd love to try a season shooting from the blind with no choke both barrels.

Randy,

I don't think there was anything special about the chokes in the Long Range guns. As I recall the only thing special was 3" chambers - the long barrels, X-full chokes, and tendency to be heavier guns was all in-line with the intended purpose - Duck Shooting. I agree with King Brown - I bet it will shoot pretty good with little choke. I shoot most of my ducks inside 20yds or so & they don't seem to mind what choke is used.

The chokes are stated to be @ .710". "If" the bore (unstated) is at normal .729" then this amounts to .019" constriction. Even in the old days this would have been considered Modified choke. I would suspect it started as a 30" bbl'd gun & has had the paralell & part of the cone cut off. Should be a very useful gun as is. Would certainly try it before doing anything at all to it.
