Gentlemen, I need to strip down an L.C.Smith. Stock off the action.
Are there any quirks or things that might go "sprooonngg" when I attack it. Thanks

It cant be kind of a pain, so you might want to just take or send it to a professional. The top lever spring is usually rather stiff, which makes it difficult to line the top lever back into the hole in the tang when you go to reassemble it. Lots of marring and scratching can occur if your not experienced and careful! Check out the tips at this picturetrail if youre still interested in doing it yourself. Im not a big fan of drilling holes through the frame or stock head, but thats just my opinion.

Terry:
I successfully managed to re-assemble my Smith last year by putting the frame into a padded vise. I then used a tapered small round file as a lever and "augered" the top lever back into the trigger plate allowing me to put the lower screw back in.
This is how I am told it was done at the factory.
If I hadn't been successful; I would have used the drill a hole and C clamp procedure as another member offered to loan me his modified clamp.
Good Luck:
Jim

That Spring is a nightmare, I finally had to drill a hole and use the C clamp method. Never again

It is like anything else, hard the first time. If you go to the L.C. Smith site there is references on how to put one back together.
Using the c clamp with a 3/32" or 1/8" dia. x 1 1/2" long drill rod in the top jaw of the c clamp and then drilling a 1 /8" hole in the stock area of the top lever shaft is the easiest way I know of.
The workers at Hunter Arms used a 3/32" nail set with a old flat bladed screwdriver with a "V" notch in it put in the hole where the tiny 4-40 screw is in the receiver bottom (next to the trigger guard hole) and push the nail set over until the top lever shaft went into it's fit in the trigger housing. That was them, they did it day in and day out. I prefer the c clamp.

They are easy to take apart, make sure the gun is cocked first or else you will have to use a 4" adjustable to turn the cocking arms. If you don't do this you could crack the forend wood and it makes putting the forend on very hard.

There are pictures there showing how this is done and it is explained how to do.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.
