I recently had a later J2.5 with a Litschert booster, and it had about 5" of eye relief; your setup may provide enough eye relief as-is, and if it does and the optics are clear then....

And yes, high # receivers are still out there, and yes, I'd really like to find one right now! Would even consider an A3 or Mark 1 or one that has been D&Td, depending.
Regards, Joe

There are a lot of connect-the-dots with this outfit. The action was made about the time the barrel was made and it's not listed in the DCM book. Murphy must have had some pull with both Springfield and Pope to have them so close together. Pope was backed up with work for months if not years. I have not even started looking for Mr. Murphy but I figure he died around 1938.

Murphy? Oh he's still around. I do beleive he's the fellow that left the valve open on the chicken fat truck that slimed up a few miles of I20 in Monroe last year. Talk about slick and stink. Bad enough to gag a pathologist. And try to explain that one to your insurance company.

Kutter, a 330 Weaver actually has a rather long eye relief. I have had several on older rifles.

A suitable eye relief for sure,,I've got a couple and an older (29S?) model with the wrench & screwdriver adj. on it. Any of them mounted like the one pictured and I'd have to crawl nearly up onto the rear of the bolt to see anything. Not where I'd want to be.
I think the answer is probably as someone has said that the 'booster' extends the 'scope eye relief. That's something I know nothing of, but that statement and the pictures together would make sense.
I kind of like the old 330's. They just look right on some of the early sporters. However in this case I don't think this rifle started out with a 'scope on it. If it were mine I'd remove it and it's mount and the holes would be gone. I'd also remove that aluminum butt plate & replace it w/a suitable one of steel. I just like that older iron sighted sporter look anyway and this one strikes me as one of those.

There have been several approaches mentioned. Here is mine: If ever a rifle needed to be correct it is this one. 1. Remove scope 2. "Fix" the holes in the receiver 3. "Fix" thr bolt handle 4. The front sight may be original if not easy to fix 5. Rust blue 6. Leave the stock completely alone 7. Haven't decided about the but plate. Would probably leave alone. gary duffey

NAILED HIM!

One cold winter I put all the custom rifles from the Arms & The Man and American Rifleman into a database. I could not find a King-Pope. But looks like I found Terry’s Pope and look who the owner is.

My Father was in Pasadena at about that time - he could have saved me quite a few bucks by buying it then and putting it away for me! I bought the gun out of the Los Angeles area, so it did not travel far. Michael, I know your King-Springfield-Pope came from a bit further South in Calif. We'll have to figure out who Mr. Murphy was, and how he got Pope to build two unusual rifles. Lucian Cary also had one of these .30 - .405 highwalls.

Next thing, Eightbore will be claiming this is his Uncle and that our two rifles are rightfully his.

I was literally in (mental) process of changing the butt stock as the Swiss butt looks lethal - I guess I'd better leave it alone now that its configuration as of 1934 is well documented.

Isn't a .30 on a .405 case pretty much a .30-40 Krag?
