Hello,

I am thinking about purchasing a 500 BP 3" double rifle and I was told that there are markings on the lumps that indicate that the rifle was regulated with 500 grain bullets. Have any of you ever heard of a 500 grain load for this cartridge? I am new to double rifles but in my research so far, I haven't run across this loading. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Jim

On a BP rifle the marks on the flats represent the bore size. So 500 ex would refer to the size in inches. Typical 500 BP bullet weights would be 320-440 grns. The later Nitro guns typically had their max bullet weight stamped as part of the proof marks on the flats.

JBG,

I haven't actually seen this rifle yet since it is in England but hopefully I will receive some pictures soon that will shed more light onto the subject. I was told over the phone that the 500 marked on the lumps referred to the bullet weight that the gun was regulated for. What you said, however, makes more sense based on what I have learned so far regarding the history of this cartridge. Thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Jim

Far as I have seen, the "common" Black Powder load for the .500 3" was a 440 gr. bullet; mine is regulated with "120 gr. of #6 Powder" as indicated on the buttplate. (Stephen Grant, JUL, back action locks)
The Kynoch Nitro for Black normally comes with a 380 gr.
That is if my memory serves me right.I dont have any of my notes here in country.

There are some other guys out there with all the detials, I may be worng on par tof this.

Try to get DGJ, volume 10, issue 4, winter 1999, page 161 - Reloading Revisited by Ross Seyfried.
500 marked on lumps probably refered to .500 caliber.
Original BPE rifles loading data usually is in the dark, but this article will help you.

Guys,

I finally received a picture of the proof marks and the barrels are stamped 500EX. I was told over the phone that the marks were on the lumps and the fellow didn't mention the EX part of it. Mystery solved! I appreciate the help from you all.

Jim Poynor
