Sometime back I was looking for information on my 12 ga. hammer gun marked S.S. Northcote. Someone posted an old catalog page which I saved but can not find now.

I read a rather fanciful account on the internet that a similar 12 ga was named for the SS Northcote, a Canadian ship of the late 1800's. I have also seen a 10 ga SS Northcote on an auction site. That make three S.S. Northcote that I have incountered.

Mine has English proof marks, 3 1/2 inch chambers and the barrels are rather stout.

My question is, does anyone in the Double Gun group have information about S.S. Northcote?

Thanks

I did this search many years ago but kept nothing.
I believe that the Hudsons Bay Company had a ship named S.S. Northcote. Did the HBC sell shotguns with this name, something to follow up on.

I've seen a Henry rifle that had a ships name on it. It was supposed to have been used for sealing.

The 10 ga shotgun on Gun Broker looks very similar to my 12 ga. as far as the engraving etc. But I doubt that it or mine was named for or carried on a Canadian ship.

My gun is cylinder bored, weights about 8 1/2 lbs. and works great for skeet with 1 oz low pressure loads of PB.

It is also my favorite gun for black powder cartridge shooting.

I just want to find out more about the maker.

For years there's been a Tobin in my extended family of gunners marked Sealers Special.

King,

I love some of the oddball names that you see on guns. A friend years ago had single shot 12 gauge marked "Black Prince" and I once owned a Saturday Night Special type revolver that was marked "Swamp Angel". I'll add "Sealer's Special" to my mental list of fun hardware store markings.

Destry, I was thinking of and telling stories of you Thursday gunning last day for geese on the tidal flats behind the roaring beach at Chezzetcook Inlet, next harbour west from your hidey-ho at Mason's. Blacks everywhere and hundreds of geese but they mostly followed the coast.

Cold as sin, took hours to break three-, four-inch salt slob to get to an open lead at Red Island, a 14-foot double-hulled aluminum don't-make-'em-anymore Lowe powered by 30hp Evinrude getting us through. Tide-driven ice made re-sets twice, the usual thing.

Took SKB o/u 20ga because three-inch 20ga Kent No. 3 was my heaviest shot, and the results were most satisfactory. We shot from ice-greased boulders---three's too crowded for seven hours in a tub---and it was one of those days with good tea and coffee, rye bread with caraway, home-made granola, and sliced smoked Antigonish Harbour black ducks. What a way to end the season!

King,

Sounds like you boys had a good day out, wish I'd have been with you. I'm snowed in at my ladyfriends this weekend, the shooting is over here except for late geese on the river in February.

You are officially the only guy I know who shoots geese with a 20 gauge and makes it work. There are times I feel undergunned with my 10 bore.

I've got to get back up your way one of these seasons. Was going to make a trip this year but my shooting partner who planned on coming along broke an arm and had to cancel. There's a February eider hunt that Mason does in NB that I'm keen to get in on as well.

Lets see if I can post a picture of the S.S. Northcote gun.

This does not appear to be a hardware gun.
