I thought maybe it belonged to Burt Reynolds. Then it would have been worth something. Oh well.

No, the gun went for what it was worth - $3500.00 But, then the provenance sold for $7250.00 - bringing the total hammer price to $10,750.00 and then the buyer's premium, which probably was 18% unless he mailed a signed check ahead of time. So, what does that come to, roughly $12,500.- or so?

Of course, it wasn't sold that way but that's how I see it regarding the value of the "stand alone" gun coupled with the value of provenance.

Bill Tapply must be delighted with the result of the auction and I am very pleased for him. I hope the new custodian of that gun enjoys many happy hours afield with it chasing grouse and woodcock.

The PGCA site reports the VH20 sold for $10,500 hammer plus 15% buyer's penalty.

Well, it only took 8 hours or so for someone to report the price.
For future reference for those who are not familiar with such matters, here is the schedule you should follow in case you ever find yourself in a similar position:
Minute 1: Learn price
Minute 1-60: Revel in the price all by yourself.
Minutes 61-120: Get on the web and visit all the sites you can, dropping coy hints that the deed has been done and make initial allusions to the fact that you know the price and what a doozy it is.
Minutes 121-360: Revisit sites to follow up on requests for the price by making more comments and analysis of the price, but still don't tell the price.
Minutes 361-720: Go eat at Bennigans
Minutes 721-960: More website tickling. Report price but in a manner that doesn't really give price. For example, use terms like 'pretty penny' or 'mega-semolians' or 'about 15% less than it would have sold for if it had 30" barrels'
Minute 961: Report price because you think by now someone else will report it before you can.
I do agree, if Burt Reynolds had owned it there would have been some real interest on my part.

It seems there are some who really have no idea who Burton Spiller was or the measure of this man... time to retire back to the upland coverts again.
Fair well.

So this hallowed Parker VH 20-once owned by the grouse legend Burton Lowell Spiller was a "stand alone" gun- well Curahee to that troopies- The basic price of a VH Meriden Parker 20 with 26" barrels and a single trigger is about $3250-$3500 then. I am sure it was a hardship for young Tapply to part with it-but duty calls-wonder about his father's Model 21 Winchester 20 bore?? RWTF

RWTF, as reported earlier, Bill Tapply is dealing with a pretty serious medical condition. I expect he might've done something else with the gun had the situation been otherwise. If one did not need the full value of the gun, including provenance, selling it to the Ruffed Grouse Society in the mid-$3K range (basic value of the gun itself) . . . I'm guessing that would've raised a pretty fair chunk of change for the benefit of grouse and woodcock.
