If you had to buy a single shot rifle, 30-06 caliber, what is the best or undervalued model on the market? It could be new or used.

Does it have to be .30-06? Not exactly a classic cartridge for a single. But I suppose a Ruger #1.

I wouldnt totally dismiss the H&R handi-rifle,chambered in .30-06. It is surprisingly accurate. I had one as a kid (actually, the virtually identical Topper JR. in .30-30)that I think I paid $89.95 for. It shot very well and I still have it. I cant imagine a better value.

I would have to agree with Mr. Wallis -- those H&R rifle are surprisingly accurate. There are many other guys who have found these rifles to be quite a bargin & accurate to boot. I would say it would be your best bet to meet your requirments.

The H&R is it for me.Big plus is send them the action and have them fit about twenty different barrels to it much like the TC Contender

Best is either a Farquharson (various makers) or a Hartmann and Weiss Heeren or Hagn action. Not undervalued, alas, but wonderful examples of the art. You won't find a lot of Farquharsons in 30.06, but there may be some re-barrels around. Otherwise, H&W will make up to suit as will Martini and Hagn, who also do superb work.

"Best" is one thing; "undervalued" is quite another. Seems to me that we need to know what you want to use the rifle for (seems like you want to use it, not just collect, because you specify a .30-06). You probably should start by specifying "best for what? (what use)"

No, I didn't realize there is a single shot forum, thanks.
The H&R, no offense, is too cheap a gun for me to bother with.
I'll admit, I don't quite know what I want yet other than I've been given the invitation to hunt for free on a private ranch with lots of deer. Other than a Winchester 30-30 I don't have a suitable rifle for deer. I've been wanting a 30-06 for some time so I thought I could kill two deer with one stone.
But, I could live with a 45-70 or some other caliber provided it is 30 cal or larger.
Some single shots seem to weigh 7 lbs and others 9 lbs....if I buy a big caliber I don't see 7 lbs. as being enough weight.
I also like the Browning B78 and 1885's in trms of looks though I don't know how they shoot, etc.
Open sights only for me, no scope.

Seems your first question was abit miss stated. To my knowledge no best are under valued and many just OK are over valued do to demand. To my thinking the Ruger #3 is still a fair value and can be cleaned up real nice. Then again as post show many think the H&R is not a cheap gun but a fair gun thats under valued and worth more than you pay for.
