Thank you Kerryman!....that's a lot of info, thanks for taking the time

DT ...I have a call in to C&H requesting a Certificate of origin,...just waiting for a reply

The gun in question is a cased two bbl set 28 & 30" in as fine original condition as I have ever encountered for something this old. mint bores and most of their brown finish still there,...has a beautiful piece of wood for a stock that just happens to fit me to a tee

The case needs some work as someone busted the lock to get it open,..keys were probably missing-- there is a wonderful smell of old that emanates from the case and gun,...you all know what I mean,..it just takes you back.

I don't like to tease so here is a couple of pictures to start,..will take some more over the weekend but won't be able to post or even go online from home since my interenet has crapped out

CJ

Verrrry nice..... C.J. The early Coggies are usually very high quality, both hammer and hammerless, you have found a beauty.
Enjoy, Terry

Nice early example. She only appears to have Black powder proof marks so be kind to her. Lagopus.....

Hey Jack and Kerryman,
I own 40967 and it was completed on September 12, 1906 according to the certificate of origin from Cogswell and Harrison. The only reliable way I have found to date a Coggie is to get the completion date directly from them.

This is the response I got from C&H

August 24th 2008

Dear Mr Opacak

Shotgun S/N 10887 refs: 41/1P; 144/2P; 223/3P.

The index to our archives shows that this gun was completed on 6th April 1881. It also shows that there are full original records on this gun in the archive section for that year. There is also an entry in the 1896 archive.

Our service is to access the antique books, extract all the details and print them out on a Certificate of Origin bearing your own name as the current owner. The information includes original measurements, weights, first owner, price paid and other details. The Certificate is very good provenance to have on a C&H gun.

If you would like this service then please send a note giving your full address and the Serial Number again. Also tell us how you would like your name quoted –e.g. middle initial? middle name? and also title.

We presume from the domain name that you are in Canada so include in the envelope a Canadian check for 88 CAD which is the cost of the service. We will respond within two weeks. We do not take card numbers as payment.

We look forward to your order.

Regards from Cogswell & Harrison
