I'm looking at a Hellis boxlock made in the 1980s. Anyone able to shed some light on the brand? Looks like a trade boxlock to me but I know nothing about English guns.
TIA! Joe

I've never seen a cheaply made Hellis. I've owned a few and they were all very good guns. They made a lot of boxlocks that are very high grade. If I find a Hellis for sale I always take a look.

One interesting thing about some Hellis boxlocks is the metal plates they attached to the stock, right behind the receiver. Not all one piece, like you see on most sideplated boxlocks. You'll see the same thing on some Coggies, but otherwise I think Hellis was the only maker that used that particular touch very frequently.

I doubt a c. 1980 gun was actually made by Hellis, rather by someone else, and up to their standards.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

How did you determine it was a 1980's gun?

M.W. Renolds has a beautiful Hellis BLE. I don't think a boxlock can get any prettier.

Thanks for the info gents! Adam, that's the gun; just maybe a bit more than I wanted to spend. Rocketman, 1980s was what M.W.Reynolds said in their ad. Recoil Rob, that's what I was thinking; still a nice gun though.

Is it just me, or are these two guns actually the same one?

The wood's the same. But the one you are looking at has a leather-covered pad. It's also listed for $1550 more. I wonder if someone bought it, returned it, and now it's relisted.

Regardless, it's beautiful.

Adam most likely they decided it needed a pad and up the price.
