I recently came into a nice, plain, cased Brum 12 ga. hammergun. As Les Paul termed it, a "good trade gun". Action is a bit loose; plain wood; in proof, and proofed in Birmingham 1904 and 1925 for BP and Nitro Powder; some simple engraving; barrels blacking still good. Barrels have been professionally cut down to 28 in.- 2 1/2 chambers as original.

The barrels are marked "WALTER LOCKE & CO. LTD. CALCUTTA, DELHI & LAHORE". Googling Walter Locke suggests a British trading company operating in India pre-1948.

The serial No. is 89xx.

Any ideas which manufacturer might have made it? I've never owned a hammergun before- Boothroyd was no help. I can email a pic if that helps.

TIA.

Walter Locke to my knowledge was a maker and a broker of everyday to fine rifles and shotguns. Many went to India. But here we go again who made what???

Thanks. That was pretty much my conclusion, too- the manufacturer is forgotten for all of time. Likely, the story of how a British gun was sold into India and then made its way to Canada is more interesting than the gun itself. I'll just go out and enjoy it occasionally.

I haven't a website, so all I can do is email a pic as directed. Email me at:

BritGun gmail com

Once Leslie Paul works his magic on it, it should shoot fine. I was given the gun by an older friend who is downsizing his life and gun vault. We're both pleased with the result.

Rest assured, my gun is nowhere near this good. But Walter Locke clearly sold some fine firearms:

That is stone beautiful. There probably is a 410 that is more beautiful, but to me, I have not seen it.
