Hello, I ended up buying an LC Smith 0E grade this afternoon that I have a few questions about and was hoping someone here could help out. It has 30" 12 ga barrels with two beads on the top rib. It also has a single trigger with selector and a leather covered butt pad on it. The serial number is 2088XX. The gun is in beautiful condition with better than 60% colors on the action and most of the original varnish on the stock, checkering is still very sharp, at $600 I couldn't pass this one. Any ideas about it, I am curious when it was made. Any information would be appreciated, I'll get some pictures up later.

Sounds like you got a great deal. You can get more info by going to the LC Smith collectors Assoc. web site. Ken

Neat Alex. Please check the 'Shotguns', 'FAQ', and 'Photo Trail' on the LCSCA Home Page http://www.lcsmith.org/ You can confirm the date of manufacture (should be 1906) and find out how to obtain a research letter from the Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center.

Alex, Congratulations on your new "elsie". This grade was first introduced in 1895, the ejectors were first offered in this gun in 1898 for a option of $25.00 and the Hunter One-Trigger was offered as an option in 1904 for $25.00. The leather covered recoil pad was also an option (not sure of price, $4.50). The standard gun was priced at $47.00 add the options and you can see that now you are at a $100.00 gun. Somebody back then wanted the options and didn't want the higher grades. Your same year 1907 London Steel barrels were an option and continued to the end of the company. Your grade changed names in 1913 to Ideal Grade.
In my opinion, the checkering on the forend looks too crisp for a gun this old. It could have been refurbashed and there is nothing wrong with that. Dr. Drew could tell you what type of Damascus barrels are on your gun. Also I would have a good double gun gunsmith look at the barrels and make sure that they were not honed out because of using black powder back then. If everything checks out I would only shoot low pressure low velocity shells (under 8,000 psi).
On your bench is that a Stanley 45 or 55, I'm thinking a 45 because I don't see that many cuters.
Good luck and keep us posted on your findings.
David

David, You are correct it is a 45, I had taken it out to put some oil on it just before I came across the Smith at a local gunstore. The photos aren't the greatest, but I don't see any sign that it's been refinished, but aside from a few dents and scratches most of the finish is there. The bores look nice and bright, could have been honed, but my gut says this is a gun that spent a lot of its life in a case.
I have other LC's that I can shoot, I probably won't shoot this one, if I do it will probably be with black powder loads. Thanks for the info.

Very nice Alex. Hunter Arms called that pattern "Good Two Rod Damascus" and used them on E grade hammer guns, pre-1892 No. 2, and post-1892 No. 0, 1, & 2. It's generic 'English 2 Stripe' or Damas Anglais or Remington Oxford 2 S.J. The '3 4' is the pre-fit and finish barrel weight. Any other marks on the brls? It is likely the gun is well past a good check and clean with a doublegun specialist smith. I've got some names in MN, or Steve Bertram is down in Boulder, CO.

The only other markings on the barrel are the serial number and the OE. It is definitely a different damascus pattern than the E grade I have, but that one is a very low number.
I would be interested in knowing the name of the MN smith, my wife is probably going to put a stop to any additional gun related expenses for awhile, but I would like to get this one and also a Pigeon grade Smith I have cleaned at some point in the future. Thanks for all the great info.
Regards,

How reliable are the single triggers on these guns?
