I want to make my own version of the Paradox gun out of a SXS.... a sort of a double rifle for sabot slugs. However, I can't find anyone who can rifle a barrel or put in a rifled choke tube. Briley says you need thick walls and no SXS's are suitable. Anyone ever try this? Did it work? Who did the work?

I think your project needs a little more definition. Do you need it to handle shot too? The rate of twist required to stabilize a sabot will destroy any hope of a useful shot pattern. If you do not require shotgun performance, then a fully rifled conversion is very possible, but very exspensive. Most guys who do conversions charge at least 3k if not more. Rifled barrels can be obtained through Hastings. I may be able to help, but I need to know what you want the gun to do.

Thanks Steve - I want the gun for slugs only no shot. I assume it will perform best if the entire barrel is rifled. Three thousand is a bit steep. I assume the Hastings barrels are for pumps and auto loaders. Feel free to email me fullers.lakeo@comcast.net or post here with additional thoughts. - Dave

Hasting barrels are also avalible in unturned blank form. These can be turned to the contour you want and sleeved into the mono-block, sights added, barrels regulated and the works blacked. Several guys will build you one, but gun conversions are pricey as it bunches of work. Good luck on your project.

What's the preferred action for this tpe of conversion, something with a third fastener?

I suppose the barrels will be regulated for one type of sabot slug so one should buy a case or two.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

The action for a slug gun is much less critical than in a centerfire rifle. The pressures are still shotgun pressures, so any good solid action will do.

Forgive my ignorance SKB but when you say "sleeved" do you mean sleeved like a 20ga in a 12 gauge barrel? I will check with Hastings, thanks for the post.

sleeving is the term for cutting the exsiting barrels off, boring the chambers out oversize and then turning the new barrels to fit in the old mono block. On rifles the new barrel stubs are often threded in addition to being soldered in place. It is essentially the same process used to replace damage smooth bore tubes.

There must be some way of doing it so that you can shoot round ball and shot. That is why they invented the Paradox guns in the first place correct? Either way you go about it, it sounds like a lot of hard work for something that might not even work! Why not just shoot rifled slugs?

Bernardelli and Beretta both make a SXS rifled slug gun for sale in Europe. It seems they are virtually impossible get your hands on in the US.
