Another pic of turkeys taken this morning. Does anyone know why they hang out in open fields when it rains? Silvers

Silvers, I was told they came into the open/freshly plowed fields during a rain because worms would be driven to the surface. ken

I always thought it was to take a cold shower with the mating season getting under way and everything.
Frank, Let me know if you need me to come up and take one out with my new hammergun.
Best, Kevin

I have been told that they can't hear as well in the woods with all the extra noise from the falling raindrops on the leaves. Have to admit, we seem to see a lot more of them in fields during rainstorms.

It seems as if this time of year, there are Turkeys a lot of places we normally dont see them. I saw yesterday, big flocks of birds, miles from any trees or creek bottoms in the middle of wheat stubbles. Cant blame it on rain, we dont get any...

I was always under the belief that turkeys go to open fields in rain storms due to their extreme hearing. The sounds of the rain hitting the leaves, etc...in the woods makes it very difficult for them to hear the sounds of predators. Being in a field in a down pour they still hear alot of extra noise with the rain, but now they have a safety buffer zone in the field that they can now rely on their eyes to make up for their handicap in hearing.
It is nearly fool proof, when a good rain comes, go to an open field or an open clearing in the woods and you will find turkeys.

Frank, That is sweet! I wish I could find one with 32" bbls. Mine is a Samuel Mathews. I will post some pictures later. I love the damascus barrels.
