Well to add to the confusion. Why does a patent date indicate American made?

This may be the Type Continental that he has. Mine is stamped "The Continental" on the lockplate and is a high grade Belgium made by SJ&D in Liege.

I went to both links you provided Thanks. I'm still a little confused though. The first link you provided states that a Fulton is clearly marked Fulton and not L.C.Smith. The gun I am talking about is clearly marked L.C.Smith and then has Mod. Fulton on it. You're thoughts???

There is no confusion. The Fulton is a boxlock...the LC is a sidelock. Both were made in Fulton, NY, by either Hunter Arms Co. (early) or by the L. C. Smith Gun Co. (Marlin) later. Is the gun in question a boxlock or a sidelock? While still a good gun, the boxlock Fulton is only worth 1/3 to 1/2 as much as a field grade elsie in similar condition.

Mike-Does boxlock mean the locking lever is right behind the hammers and side lock means on the side plate of the gun??? I just started buying rabbit eared last year, and as you can tell don't know much.

Ernie: If the gun in question is an exposed hammer gun, it's not a Fulton boxlock, which were all hammerless. You say it has the words "Model Fulton" .. Could it possibly say "Made in Fulton"... MDC

Just to up date all you guys that try to keep me straight. Went to auction last night, bought the L.C. Smith sidelock, made by hunter arms in Fulton ,N.Y. for $140.00. Bought the Continental 12 ga. DB Rabbit Eared for $240.00. It is in excellent shape. While I don't usually mess with pistols at all I fell in love with the 7 shot Ladies pepperbox and bought it for $150.00. Then figured while there I might as well make a clean sweep of it so bought the Colt 41 Ca. for $180.00. With the above information, I'll let you guys decide how well you educated me.
