I was looking at some of my guns today. Not stroking, as such, but studying them.
Two unique Stevens guns in particular.
They are the guns that seem to be R&D slug guns that I have questioned before.
This is the first that I have noticed that they have no serial numbers. Strange to just now notice this, but, that is the case.
The guns are marked J. Stevens Arms Company.
Chicopee Falls, Mass. USA
They have to be later than the 1920's and I have a gut feeling that they are circa 1960's or so.
How do I explain this odd situation?
Best,
John

John:

American manufactured shotguns and .22 caliber rifles were not required to have serial numbers until the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA).

This also required all guns imported into the United States to be marked with country of origin and name, city and State of the importer.

That may explain the lack of serial numbers on your guns.

Kind regards,

Thanks for the reply.
This is what I had thought but admit that I have never seen a recent American shotgun without a serial number before. Not that I remember.
I suppose that if these guns were intended to be for sale, they would have serialized them before the sale.
These guns were from their research dept. and as far as I know, were never offered to a dealer. They were bought by employees and then found their way to me.
Here are links to pics of one.

John, I guess you already know that Savage/Stevens guns produced between 1948 and 1968 were date coded with a small letter and number stamp inside an oval or circle located on the bottom (outside) of the frame either just behind the hinge or just in front of the trigger-guard. "A" is 1948 and alphabet letters following for each year. O and Q were skipped. Does your R&D gun have a date code?...Geo

George:
I did not know that.
The guns have such stamps and I will decipher them.
Thanks,
John
