Hello,
I'm considering a Beretta BL-3 in 28 gauge.
The gun has 26 inch barrels topped with a vent rib, single selective trigger, extractors and a nicely engraved action.
Bluing is 98% Wood is about 85% except for a crack on the left side of the forend.
The crack has been repaired and appears to be stable. It is still quite visible though but I could live with it. The forend is also a shade loose. Not enough to worry about right now, but it will probably need attention in the future.
Anyway, the asking price is $850.00
I'm wondering if this is a fair price.
I presume that 28 gauge Beretta's of this era are rather hard to come by?
Opinions please!

The Blue Book says $425 @ 90%, plus 50% for 28 ga, if condition is 90%+, taking it up to $637.50. To me, a visible repair would be a minus consideration. The looseness is probably the screws that hold the forend iron to the wood. That looseness is also possibly why it cracked. I'd tell him what the Blue Book says offer $600,and see what happens. They're good guns but not overly valuable.

I would second Jim's advise. I would also call Cole's and tell them what you are seeking. They are likely to have a good forearm on hand. If it were me, I'd look for a clean 20 with ejectors, they are more plentiful and you don't pay an arm and a leg for cartridges and odds are good you can get more of 'something' should you run out afield, not always so w/a 28, but a box of 28 cartridges hardly fills a pocket and none can argue that. It gets down to what appeals to you and at what price .. as described, its high. Having said that, I pd close to that last year for a S56E 20 [they were later labeled as BL-4's] that is exceptional and as new. The original owner was suffering from terminal health issues and was trying to get top $$ for it. I thot it was worth his asking price. It is 28" IM & F, yet another dove gun. A 28 extractor with flaws is something I would weigh carefully before putting a lot into it.

I have not examined this gun internally, but it looked to be in excellent condition from the outside. The crack which seems to have been "repaired" with crazy glue is result of impact and not due to shooting. If this 28br had longer barrels I would have made an offer.

Bryan--28 ga. Beretta's of that vintage are scarce and the BL series are nicely made guns. Despite what the blue book says, that gun is easily worth $750, if the repair is not unsightly or can be improved upon.

I agree, Bill. I have a BL4 twenty and it is a very nice gun with never a problem.

I have owned a BL-4 since 1970, the difference between the BL-3 and BL-4 is I beleive ejectors and more engraving on the BL-4. Nice gun mine weighs 6 lbs. 3 ozs. 26" barrels imp.cyl/mod. Shot a lot of stocked pheasants and skeet with it. Maybe one bird more with the 20 ga. on skeet.
