A question mostly for Aaron Little, Steve Bertram, Mark Cooper and other gunsmiths.

I am preparing to build a electric induction coil furnace for my shop and I think that 15kW may not be enough for heavy heating to braze large diameter items such as to braze shoe lumps to a barrel set and that maybe I should build one with a 25kW basis. Have either of you built one and if so what is your experience with the size electronics and building the cooling water pump system?

Several blacksmiths in the national group of which I am a member have built electric induction coil forges and the prices and availability of the electronics from China are very good now.

Kindest Regards;
Stephen Howell

I have been considering building one for a couple of barrel joining projects that I would like to pursue, I have not done so though. Please keep us informed. I am quite curious about having one.

Now I remember where I saw one being used was on the purdey video series produced recently they were brazing a barrel it didn't look like a very large coil some will heat a large metal item to 1200 in 40 seconds sounds like a fun project.let us know how it goes.Mark

I've seen a 15kW setup glow knife steel many times for forging, and the link shows a fellow selling various size coils. Some of the coils would seem to clear a lump with barrels, but maybe not clamping steups. Even though the coils are easy to make, maybe that supplier can calculate and make the largest size/shape coil opening for a 15kW machine to braze, plus a cushion.
