Since this is the best source I have for such a question, I thought I'd ask this bunch.
A friend has a relative with a WW2 gun that they would like to have appraised. They live in the greater Wash DC area. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Dave, Thanks for the info on that dealer.
Jas is doing great. I can't believe I waited this long to get a dog. She had a session of rattlesnake training a couple weeks back and did great. I'll probable take her back once more before the Sept dove openner. I'm trying to do all the 'right' things to give her the best opportunity for everything.

You could try Art Harris in the Bethesda area for shotgun related appraisals. He may do rifles and hand guns also, but I know of him as an appraiser and dealer mostly in shotguns.

Mr. Condon can be a bit high handed at times, I would get at least two opinions. David

Most appraisals are rather expensive for common guns. If he just wants to know what it is worth, describe and picture it here. He will get good information. In my opinion, the time to appraise a nominal loss for an insurance company is after the loss. As long as the gun is not a rare and valuable collector piece, I see the insurance company writing the check with no prior appraisal needed. A fifty dollar appraisal on a five hundred dollar gun is a waste of money. I am in the D.C. area and I appraise guns, but only those that should be appraised. Save your money.

Bring it to my house and Eightbore and I will double-team you into a figure. No charge for the appraisal, but 20-yr. old single malts and Monte Cristo #2s are generously taken in lieu of hard cash. David Condon is out in Middleburg VA and the whole town is now in the frenzied throes of trying to deflect the development of a Williamsburg-style golf/spa/mudbath - type resort being pushed to the max by the billionaire divorcee who owns BET. Town residents are pushing back REAL hard against this, citing the "destruction of the town's bucolic setting and genteel, laid-back lifestyle." Could be the next Kingsmill on The James, who knows?
