Things have been a bit slow here, but here are two auctions, both with about the same starting prices,
both I think interesting to the members here, so which would you rather have and why?

An Adolph 1903

Adolph 1903

or one of Townsend Whelen's 1903's Whelen 1903

I agree with your assessment that it has been slow around here. And I like your idea for discussion, but out of consideration of interested bidders on guns I try to avoid discussing active auctions on an open forum. So, how about we pick a couple from a recent Amoskeag auction.

First is a nice little SA 1922 G&H Hornet conversion using the original Armory stock. Hornet
As a bit of a Hornet fan, I was pleased to see this one sell for what I felt was a very strong price.

Next is a nice Roberts and Kimball 257. Roberts and Kimball I do not know how many of these were made, but it could not have been a lot and they are seldom seen for sale. Evidently this one did not get a high enough bid to make the reserve. I would be interested in knowing if that rifle has the original 25 Roberts chamber or the factory remington 257 Chamber.

I don't remember the Townsend Whelen 1903 that sold on Amoskeag years ago looking like that gun. I'll take the Adolf. The carving and engraving are interesting and the stock lines are a lot more pleasing to me. The Whelen grip looks quite odd. The whole gun looks "wrong" somehow to my uneducated eye.

I like the Adolph. The lines and geometry are much more pleasing to me.

if the Whelen was a "Whelen" chambering I might go for that but since they're both .30 cals the Adolph is a much better looking gun. Then again the Whelen has the scope which I would need....

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.
