I am thinking about spiffing up some barrel breech ends where the engine turnings are a little dinged up/worn from opening and closing the gun. I think that would be done on the drill press (not sure of speed) and with an x-y table. Any coaching would be most appreciated. Obviously I need to practice on scrap. Thanks much, Gil

You know, that is a bad area to remove material from on an old gun.

Over on Dewey’s blog you can see where he puts those new lines on the breech ends after a refurbishment, but, I’d bet the gun is absolutely back on the face when he does it. Looks good when it is all done, but, can’t say I’d want just that done to any gun.

Best,
Ted

Normally that's done when re jointing a gun seems like a trivial nusance and just honest wear.

It's just the sides, not the barrel breech ends where they would meet the standing breech. Do you guys think I shouldn't mess with it? Thanks for the replies! Gil

What is “honest wear”? Always seemed like a ridiculous phrase to me. Honest as opposed to dishonest wear. Either there’s wear or there’s not. But I digress….and agree with the others…..why bother unless you’re doing a rejoint. Like previously stated, not a great idea to remove metal from a spot that requires metal to be there to ensure good fit/seal/joint.

Are you talking about the decorative lines that are seen on the the breach end of barrels, like a Purdey? Those are easy enough to re-scuff in and likely won’t remove any metal. If your talking about engine turning the breach, then yes, Id pass on doing that.

No. That would be retarded.

Honest wear is a term goofy gun dealers use and it’s stupid. Like saying a used car is a cream puff. Dumb.
