Forty years ago today, terrorists from a group that would come to be known as Hezbollah truck bombed a US barracks in Beirut. 220 marines, 18 sailors, and 3 soldiers died. President Reagan wrote, “The goal we sought in that troubled place was worthy of their best and they gave their best. They were no part of our failure to achieve that goal. In the end, hatreds centuries old were too much for all of us, … Yes, our Marines are coming home - but only because they did all that could be done.”

As that same war rages still, each who gave their lives that day are not forgotten.

So tragic. An attack like this one was always a fear of mine when my son-in-law was deployed over that way for almost a year.
I have another group of Marines coming to my farm this week for the 19th edition of Heroes Hunting. A prize I always give out for a long-range shooting contest is a copy of the secret US battle map for Iwo Jima that was made 3 months before the invasion. Honoring the history and tradition of the Corps with the current active duty Marines is always a focus. I'll be mentioning this 40th anniversary to them, along with the current concerns we're all aware of...

I lost a friend in that bombing. He was a marine and 20 years old.
