I’m seeking recommendations for someone to make a shotgun ram rod for my 11 bore shotgun. I have what appears to be the original ramrod, but I do not want to break, so I want a replacement to match identically. PM if you prefer.
I always made my own from hickory ramrod blanks I bought one year at Friendship, IN at the NMLRA National Matches. I tapered them and installed the appropriate furniture, and "aged" them to look appropriate. Fine shotguns of the era had ebony ramrods, and the few originals I have seen are beautiful. Don't know if TOTW would make one from ebony, but it is a superior wood for the purpose, if grain runs properly. Whichever, it is imperative that the grain be inspected in the blank beforehand to ensure that it runs perfectly straight throughout it's length and does not angle out the side at any point. Angling grain in a ramrod leads to breakage when pressure is put on it to seat a charge, or a ball/bullet, and when the breakage occurs it always does so with a sharp point that usually pierces the hand. Ugly wounds can ensue.
I successfully made one from a section of old Green Heart fishing rod. I got it from a local rod builder who had a section from a scrap rod. It has worked perfectly so far. Lagopus.....
Thanks for the tips. The original does appear to be ebony and I would like to find an ebony blank, or better yet, a finished rod, if anyone knows of an available one!
I found a neat video on making an ebony ramrod. I don't have these tools or woodworking skills, but it I am sure there are folks out there that can do this.
