Picked up this nice Baker 12 ga at auction earlier this month. Was listed as an R grade by the auction house. From what I've read the serial number is too early (4xx) I think it's a B grade. Opinions? Jeff

Jeff, the grade marking should be on your near the serial no. on the barrel flats or on the receiver flats. If it has twist barrels, it is B Grade, and if it has Damascus barrels it is an A Grade. The "engraving" was actually etching.

Nice Jeff: could you post a close up of the damascus pattern for the PictureTrail? Thanks! Drew

Daryl, I have never seen the grade markings on my Bakers. Is it because they are later ser. no.? Mine are between 2111 and 6111. I always used the barrel style, type of engraving, type of stock configuration to determine grade. Is that wrong?

Look at the water table opposite the ser no. there should be a letter by itself there designating grade.

Daryl: Likely a dumb question, but what's the difference, in this context, between engraving and etching? Just curious. TT

Daryl, twist it is. found a faint B on the watertable. Also located your nice article in the 1997 Guns Illustrated. Thanks. Revdocdrew, Sorry the pattern isn't very good as you can see. TwoTriggers, the etched scenes appear to have little depth as opposed to engraving I have seen. I'm not sure what method was used to create the etching. I still like the way the snipe and duck was rendered. Jeff

Engraving is cut with a chisel, etching is done with acid, to give a simplified description.

Hmmm, I have all my Bakers out right now, I am looking for the grading on the water table. I don't see any markings? Some of these guns still hold a good percentage of their color case, so I don't think the marks were removed. I am looking at A,B and Paragon. Now, on the Paragon #397, on the barrel forearm hook, there is a "D20".A #2925 has a "D" on the forearm hook. B #5847 has an "L" and a "1" on the forearm hook. B #5956 has what appears so be a "1" or maybe an "E", but it is faint on the forearm hook. B #2112 has no markings that I can find. On the water table of the reciever or anywhere on the barrels, I find no other marks. I am grading them in accordance to barrel type (Damascus or Twist), ser. no. range, style of stock and the type of engraving. Am I missing something?
Gun #6111 has been rebarreled, there are no marks on the water table other than the ser. no and someone took fluid barrels and it appears they were restamped to match the reciever. Receiver #6111 is a lugged receiver and the barrels are not lugged. There are no markings of any kind anywhere about anything on those barrels. I didn't look at the Leader #98476.
