It may have been a year or two after the introduction in the fall of 1931 that the solid rib was available on the "Standard" Grade 31A, but it (and the VR) were offered on the Trap Gun.

This is a catalog listing from 1935

Thanks Doc. I am going to look at a 31 tomorrow with a solid rib. I was told it is a Trap Special. Not sure of the marking but I have heard positive things about the 31 so its worth a look.
Unfortunately due to my torn rotator I found pump guns difficult to shoot. It cost nothing to look so we shall see.

The Model 31-TC "Target" Grade featured a 30- or 32-inch ventilated rib barrel. There was another trap gun, the Model 31S "Special Trap" with a solid rib barrel. Remington only offered three ventilated rib barrels for the Model 31, the 12-gauge 30- & 32-inch Trap barrels and the shorter 12-gauge SKEET barrel. Everything from a Model 31A "Standard" Grade to the Model 31F "Premier" Grade could be had with a plain or a solid rib barrel. I have not heard of anything but a plain barrel for the Model 31R "Riot" Grade. Remington never offered a vent rib on the 16- & 20-gauge Model 31, just plain and solid rib barrels. Model 31 ribs were milled integral with the barrel.

In the same years, Remington offered plain, solid rib and ventilated ribs barrels for their Model 11 and "The Sportsman" autoloaders in all three gauges and most barrel lengths. Also all milled integral with the barrels.

I had a chance to look at it this afternoon. The only markings I see on the side is 31. Gun was made in 1936. Im thinking it is a field gun with a solid rib.

In your case, the grade would depend on the wood. However, I don't know whether the Special Trap was marked as such.

I have a 31S 30" solid rib trap gun, the stocks on these were checkered unlike the the field grades. Mine has ay better than average wood, but not as nice as the 31TC guns I have seen. I looked at a 31 Long range that also had a solid rib, but very plain wood.
