I recently bought a Darne 20ga R-15 as imported by Stoger. The receiver area seems to have a yellowing coating of Lacquer or something on it. Can this be removed with something without affecting the engraving? Also, the butt plate appears to be original to the gun, but undersized. Could this have shrunk? Lastly, the forend tip is loose in the recess, not in danger of falling out though. Glue or leave as is? Sorry no pics beyond my skill set Thanks Tom

The yellow stuff is old varnish, to protect the French gray. You can soak it off with solvent, re lube the breech and go from there. The butt plates are a weird organic plastic that features horse hooves and rubber, among other things, and, they all shrink. Gunter sells a polyureathane version that wont't shrink, but, doesn't have the color styrations that you sometimes get with the originals.
Do not shoot your gun with a loose forend. This is bad juju. PM me and I'll walk you through it. it isn't tough, but, you need decent screw drivers.

Thanks Ted, on the varnish, just wanted to be sure. I did not shoot it with a loose forend, the part that is loose is the ebony insert. Not familiar with who Gunter is, for the butt plate. Thanks Tom

Gunter Phrommer, I may have his last name messed up, but google Dutchman wood works. I think.
Just glue the ebony back in place. If you are able to get the front wood off (not tough, two screws on that one, I think) you can work the ebony free, clean it up with 320 sand paper on the glue surfaces, glue it up and wrap surgical tubing, stem to stern to clamp it in place.
Done it about a dozen times.
